“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”(Psalm 27:1, ESV)
As a single mother in my late twenties, I began to feel the weight of past poor choices and the burden of trying to solve my own problems. Outside of work and my son’s school activities, I had no social life. I was withdrawing, pulling back from anything that felt too demanding. Life felt difficult, and isolation seemed like the only answer.
In that season of heaviness and isolation, a neighbor invited me to a new church that met in the movie theater down the street. I went. I stayed. I gave my life to Jesus, and I was baptized. My hope was immediately restored, and God began to work on everything I couldn’t fix on my own. As I walked with Him daily, my thinking became clearer, my decisions became wiser, and my path began to level out. The darkness that once felt suffocating began to lift in response to God’s steady, faithful light.
Self-reliance only made my world smaller, but God’s steadfast healing made it whole. God wants to do the same for you as He did for David and for me.
David knew Yahweh as the true God based on what he heard (2 Samuel 7:22, 1 Chronicles 17:20) and what he experienced. He knew God was faithful and had the power to deliver on all His promises. The words of Psalm 27:1 were written so that we, too, may trust in God’s ability to rescue and deliver.
Salvation comes through Jesus Christ alone. It is through Him that we find and have fellowship with God (John 14:6). When we give our hearts to Jesus and live faithfully according to His Word, the light of God shines brightly in us, not only to lead us away from the dark but to become a beacon for others who may be lost or discouraged—a steady light in a world that often tells us to look inward instead of upward.
Today, take a moment to remember all the times when God was there for you, even when you didn’t know Him. It’s never too late to move away from the shadows back into the light. Let the words of Lamentations 3:22-23 remind you of the hope you have in Jesus.
"The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness."
Closing Prayer: Thank you, Lord, for Your steadfast love. Thank you for being the light of our lives. You have not left us without hope or help, but You are always present, willing and able to guide us out of the dark and into the safety of Your arms. We love You, LORD. There is no better place to be than in Your presence.
