WHEN GOD ILLUMINATES YOUR LIFE

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?”(Psalm 27:1, ESV)

As I get older, I prefer natural light to artificial light. I’ve noticed I see better with less effort outdoors, and even the brightest light bulb seems dim compared to standing outside. It reminds me that there’s something sacred in the way natural light reaches us—something no bulb can mimic.

The Bible tells us that God created light (Genesis 1:3). We can imitate God’s creations to a degree, but never fully replicate them, because only God creates in fullness and perfection.

Light, specifically God’s light, is like that. True light only comes from God! No bulb contains all the properties of natural light.

Scripture also reveals that God not only created light, but He is light (1 John 1:5), and His light is everlasting (Isaiah 60:20). Darkness will never overtake it, nor will it grow dim.

After years of following God, walking with Him, obeying Him, and seeking a close relationship with Him, David knew what it felt like to be protected by God. He had a long record of experiencing God’s saving power, from facing a giant everyone else feared, to fleeing a king who tried to kill him, to enduring a son who stole the hearts of the people, led a major rebellion, and forced him from his home. And beyond all that, there were ongoing battles with the Philistines, Edomites, Moabites, Ammonites, and Arameans.

I’ve also had seasons when the path felt long and winding with steep, rocky terrain and slippery slopes. In those times, I learned I didn’t need a technique or mantra. The answer wasn’t within me. What I needed was the God who sees clearly when I cannot.

So when David declares, “The LORD is my light,” he speaks with full confidence in God. Through experience, he learned that God’s light protects, guides, and is always present to those who seek Him.

The true Light of this world illuminates darkness and brings us to a place of confidence, where fear becomes courage and despair turns to hope.

Today, let this verse become your anchor. When fear whispers, speak the truth: The LORD is my light. When circumstances grow difficult or confusing, and shadows seem to loom around the corner, remember that darkness doesn’t respond to our strength—it responds to God’s presence.

Closing Prayer: God, there is no other source of light that comes close to You. Help us see clearly what dims Your Light in our lives and help us turn to You today for guidance and protection. In Your great mercy and compassion, may Your Spirit lead us to Truth, and may that Truth set us free. Amen.
